  • Year 11 Maths and English Evening

    The 3rd November 2016 saw the academy’s first dedicated Maths and English Information Evening, and what a success the evening was. Almost all of our year 11 cohort of students and their parents turned up to the evening to help guarantee their success at TSLA and in the future. It was great to see over 400 people in attendance, and know that our students want to achieve the best they possibly can.

    Our Partnership with Virgin East Coast Trains through Business in the Community has been going from strength to strength since the start of the academic year with various activities taking place, and being planned for the coming year.     In November this year, eighteen of our Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 students had the opportunity to take part in the Debate Mate programme. Debate Mate is an after school activity that teaches students the importance of thoroughly researching a debate topic, critically evaluating the information they have gathered, developing an opinion on the topic, then debating the issues raised.     The academy has run a Rotary Club sponsored Interact Club for over 3 years. The Club’s mission is to make a positive change in their school and community. As many of the original group left the academy last academic year, the mantle has been passed to our newest members who have already been a credit the name of Interact.     On 31st October, students and staff at the academy decided to keep with tradition and celebrate Halloween in style by carving some truly gruesome pumpkins, oranges and tomatoes at the Halloween Party. Before the party began, the student librarians spent lunchtime decorating the library and chose spooky music that would create a fantastic Halloween atmosphere.     The 12th October we held our annual careers fair and it was our most successful yet. All years groups had the opportunity to meet over 30 different businesses and education provider’s to help students decide what they may want to do after school and as a career in their futures.

    Students all prepared for the day by filling in their own careers aspirations and areas of interest on a student record card. They also had to prepare questions to ask the visitors and had to reflect on the answer

    Wednesday 5th October was the academy’s annual open evening, which saw the showcasing of the fantastic work that goes on in each and every department in the academy. From Harry Potter’s magic spells, treasure hunts, trampolining, cooking, a Parisian café to volcanoes and rockets, we had it all. Not to mention the live music and wok demonstration and food tasting going on in the canteen!     Our Year 9 and 10 GCSE Photography students have entered the British Exploring Society #BEabug competition.
    They have done some brilliant work and their photographs are currently on the BES website. 
    Lucy Antrobus won second prize in the National Competition!
    Also, Marta Zurawska has been awarded third prize the competition.

  • TSLA Mosaic Mentoring programme

    1st August 2016

     A group of year 9 students have been taking part in the Mosaic Mentoring programme where they have been developing their employability skills, and understanding of the world of work. The programme culminated with the students visiting the First Direct Arena to have a behind the scenes tour, and meet staff who could tell them about their roles and the different types of roles available at the arena.   • TSLA Student is a winner!

    Year 8  TSLA student Luqman has won a nationwide competition with Virgin Trains after designing a futuristic train.

    The 13-year-old student entered the competition in June, along with the rest of Year 7 and 8, which involved designing a train for the future with his design chosen as one of three winners. The design, which included a crazy golf pitch, gym and Jacuzzi all on board, helped bag him four first class return train tickets, courtesy of Virgin Trains.
